The Battle of Cape Split

In seventeen hundred and eighty one
The rebels came with their guns
Privateers from the coast of Maine
Pirates by any other name

Took Sheffield by surprise
He was laden down with supplies
Headed west for river Saint John
In 10 minutes he was all but done

And the waters
Of the Fundy Bay
Rose and fell
Like any other day

Bishop rushed to help the cause
Headed out without a pause
His fateful mistake that day
Forgot to check the power keg

Out manned and out gunned
The rigging in tatters he was overrun
The Americans had another prize
More prisoners and supplies
And the waters
Of the Fundy Bay
Rose and fell
Like any other day

They sent for Belcher and “Success”
The only one who could save the rest
The Americans were caught in the tide
At Cape Split with no place to hide

Belcher opened up the guns
The Yankees were now on the run
When he rescued Sheffield ship
The Yanks on board swam to Cape Split

And the waters
Of the Fundy Bay
Rose and fell
Like any other day

As the sun set in the west
Bishop knew he couldn't rest
His men rose up and took the ship
Raised the sails and let her rip
All 3 ships then gave chase
But the privateers slipped away
“Success” returned the very next day
Caught 30 men along the bay

And the waters
Of the Fundy Bay
Rose and fell
Like any other day

And the waters
Washed away
All the memories
Of that day
