Biography

Anthony Dashawn Coleman (born November 24, 1992), better known as Lu Castro, is an American battle rapper, MC, producer, and songwriter from The Bronx, New York. Wanting to pursue music from an early age, Lu started out writing raps at 10 years old, but didn’t start making songs until he was 14. He started recording songs on a neighbor’s computer, and later interned at a local recording studio, where the owner would let Lu loan out to record music.

By the time he turned 20, Lu decided on an additional path to take to expand his brand as an up-and-coming artist: battle rap. In an interview with Atlanta-based music blog The Progress Report Media Group, he admits that he didn’t take
battle rap seriously initially, but later got more focused on the sport once he saw how attainable his goals were. Starting out on the New Jersey-based battle platform Showtime Battle Arena in 2013, he later saw himself rising in popularity on the league, which led to him branching out to other East Coast-based platforms like HY SoCieTy Battle League, and later URL. He debuted on URL’s Proving Grounds circuit in 2017 against Reup Snub, and later gained more prominence on the league with his unorthodox rhyming patterns, gruff delivery, and charismatic stage presence.

As he climbed up URL’s ranks between 2018 and 2020, Lu saw himself getting matchups with bigger and better names, from veterans like DNA and Prez Mafia to fellow up-and-comers like Your Honor, Kid Chaos, and Jey The Nitewing. Lu was also a supporting member of the Goonies battle crew from 2018 until their breakup in March 2020. Even after getting a chance to compete in the first season of Ultimate Madness, URL’s 16-MC tournament with a $25,000 grand prize, where he made it to the second round before losing to eventual runner-up Jey The Nitewing, Lu’s battle stock continued to elevate. In 2021, as the crowds started to slowly return for big-room battle events, Lu and Eazy The Block Captain made history as the first battlers to debut on NOME and Summer Madness in the same year since 2017 – a feat last accomplished by Lu’s former Goonies teammate Nu Jerzey Twork.

Lu’s passion for music hasn’t died down either. From 2016 to 2019, he worked as a songwriter and producer for the Fox musical drama tv series Star, where he received songwriting credits for the Season 2 song “Spotlight” (among other songs) and co-producing credits for the Season 3 song “Rude”. In 2021, Lu’s music releases also experienced success, with his singles “Big Dawg”, “Flood The City” and “My Day” going viral in battle rap circles on social media, and with the latter song receiving airplay on BET Jams and MTV Live.
