Kindred Valley - 1921

Verse 1
Deeper down I dive
Into the smoke
I trade my life
And I break my back
Just to mine some coal
Try and keep my head down
And do as they please
But Baldwin Felts
With a gun in his belt
Got his eyes on me
Chorus
It gets hotter and hotter the deeper we go
And we all go down, but a few come up
To see one day more
And the company man will tell you otherwise
But ask any man
With a pick in his hand
The devil's in those mines

Verse 2
Oh and those mines. they'll eat men alivе
They're hungry for souls
Black lungs for black gold
Can't get out, I'vе tried
Gun a man down on the courthouse steps
Can't get away
A mule killed and you're fired
A man who's killed is replaced

Chorus
It gets hotter and hotter the deeper we go
And we all go down, but a few come up
To see one day more
And the company man will tell you otherwise
But ask any man
With a pick in his hand
The devil's in those mines
Verse 3
One million rounds and ten thousand men
Climbing up a mountain, guns are raised and a hundred dead
Now they're takin's us down in cuffs and chains
But a life in the pen is better than cold, cold grave

Chorus
It gets hotter and hotter the deeper we go
And we all go down, but a few come up
To see one day more
And the company man will tell you otherwise
But ask any man
With a pick in his hand
The devil's in those mines
