Time - Graceland

original text at lyrnow.com/1967115
Stranger in a strange land, acid rain waste land
World builder clay hands used to be a stage hand
Thoughts take flight but I don't let the plane land
I'm a die eating in the studio Graceland
Hit the jailhouse with a rock break it gate smash
Monopoly of violence is the power states have
Aiming with my pen I know the range that my pen has
I'm saying fuck 12 every day like I hate match
Do you see the world how it is or how you want it?
I am not a realist I always look beyond it
Prefiguring futures autonomy creates
They try to distract us with reform and dеbates
They teach us hiеrarchy from our schools to our jobs
Look closely a principal is just a boss
The prison is detention, the yard is recess
My friend's still in jail so no one's free yet

"Time" by Graceland is a powerful and thought-provoking song that delves into the themes of social justice, resistance, and the struggle for autonomy. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a world filled with oppression and injustice, where the prison system and the power of the state loom large. The protagonist of the song refuses to conform to societal norms, instead choosing to challenge the status quo and advocate for change. With references to being a "stranger in a strange land" and a "die eating in the studio Graceland," the song captures the feeling of being an outsider in a world that often feels hostile and unwelcoming. Ultimately, "Time" is a call to action, urging listeners to question the world around them and fight for a better future.

Biography

edit bio
Time was a rock band from Yugoslavia that made a significant impact on the music scene in the 1970s. Formed in 1971 by Dado Topić, who had previously been a member of Korni Grupa, the band quickly gained a following with their unique blend of progressive rock and jazz influences.

The original lineup of Time included Dado Topić on vocals, Tihomir “Pop” Asanović on organ, Vedran Božić on guitar, Mario Mavrin on bass, Ratko Divjak on drums, and Brane Lambert Živković on piano and flute. Over the years, the lineup changed frequently, but the core members remained dedicated to creating innovative and captivating music.

Time released three albums during their time together, each showcasing their musical versatility and talent. Their first album featured a prominent Hammond organ, piano, and flute, while their second album had a harder sound with several ballads. The third album introduced a jazz-funk production style, further expanding their musical repertoire.

Some of Time's most popular songs include “Da li znaš da te volim”, “Rock ‘n’ roll u Beogradu”, and “Istina mašina”, which showcased their ability to create memorable and engaging music that resonated with audiences.

After disbanding in late 1977, Dado Topić embarked on a successful solo career, but the legacy of Time continued to live on. In 1998 and 2001, the band reunited for a limited number of live concerts, delighting fans with their timeless music and energetic performances.

Today, Time still plays together as a rock trio, continuing to captivate audiences with their unique sound and enduring musical legacy. Their influence can be heard in the work of many contemporary artists, solidifying their place in the history of Yugoslavian rock music.
